Garda hunt after woman allegedly sexually assaulted in car in Ballsbridge

Gardai are appealing for witnesses after a woman was allegedly sexually assaulted in a car in Dublin.

The incident happened around Ballsbridge in the early hours of Sunday morning with investigators on the hunt for a man in his '20s or 30s' with short dark hair, a short beard, and glasses.

A source told Dublin Live that one theory being explored is that the victim may have been in a taxi at the time.

The source explained: "This woman was enjoying a night out in the city centre - it is being examined that she may have been on board a taxi when this sexual assault took place.

"There would have been a lot of cars and other vehicles on the road at the time and it is hoped that someone will have spotted something.

"Dash cams could hold the key."

A garda spokesman has appealed for help in tracking down the alleged attacker.

He said: "The incident is believed to have occurred in the vicinity of Shelbourne Road, Ballsbridge, Merrion Road, Serpentine Avenue areas of Dublin 4 between 00.43hrs and 02.14hrs.

"Gardai also have particular interest in the movements of the injured party in the Mountjoy area of Dublin 1 between 02.14hrs until 03.44hrs.

"The injured party describes the male suspect as being in his late twenties or early thirties, with a short beard, glasses, short dark hair and a short sleeved shirt.

"The injured party was wearing a long black dress and the incident occurred in a car."

Investigating gardai have made an appeal to:

  • Any persons who noticed anything suspicious in the following areas between 00.43hrs and 02.14hrs on Sunday the 9th of December 2018, Shelbourne Road, Ballsbridge, Merrion Road & Serpentine Avenue, Dublin 4.

  • Any motorists with ‘dashcam’ footage relating to the above times and locations
  • Any other information that may assist the investigation

An internal report into the force's youth referral scheme found that 7,894 cases where youths were deemed not to be suitable for the diversion programme were not appropriately dealt with over a seven-year period. Just six pieces of non-Brexit related legislation have made it to the Government's priority list for the new term, the Irish Independent understands. This is an acknowledgement that British Prime Minister Theresa May faces a crushing defeat when the Withdrawal Agreement is pu...
