THE SWEDISH RAILWAY ORCHESTRA

THE SWEDISH RAILWAY ORCHESTRA Rob Smith is not afraid to dip his toes in unknown waters. Having spent years on various circuits armed with an acoustic guitar and a knack for a catchy melody, the Dubliner has turned his attention to electronic music. Initially starting out as a DJing duo, The Swedish Railway Orchestra made their live debut in 2013 in New York’s Webster Hall and closed Vantastival’s main stage two years in a row. The duo dissolved and Smith found himself with the name (the name originated from something he said on a train from Stockholm airport to the city centre watching buskers on the platform) and an urge to create something new and a break away from the singer-songwriter scene which left him somewhat unsatisfied. Citing influences such as LCD Soundsystem, Talking Heads and local heroes Jape, an all-instrumental album called Northern Lights was released in September 2016 and the follow up, the Late Night EP, was released a month later. These recordings caught the attention of the Dublin International Film Festival, who used TSRO tracks for their campaign throughout the festival. Two stand-alone singles, I Don’t See Any Daylight Anymore and Time, this time with vocals for the first time, were released in early 2017 to enormous acclaim. He is currently finishing the project’s second album. ○
