Celebrating both 50 years of the group, and co-founder Han Bennink’s 75th birthday, IMC are de- lighted to present Instant Composers Pool (ICP). The ICP is a unique and internationally renowned collective of Dutch composer-improviser-instrumentalists formed in 1967 by Misha Men- gelberg, Han Bennink and Willem Breuker. Put simply, it is revolutionary band and the last of its kind. For half a century, the ever-evolving orchestra has collaborated with giants of the experimental music world. Their current line-up consists of ten of the most innovative musical voices from around the globe. The exact programme is always a surprise, as the band decides just a few minutes before the per- formance what they will be playing. From ragtime to swing, bop to free jazz, classical to carnival, the ICP Orchestra continues to be at the forefront of experimental music. Nothing else sounds quite like them and no two gigs are ever alike. “...The Instant Composers Pool Orchestra, from Amsterdam, ....they are scholars and physical comedians, critics and joy-spreaders.” - New York Times ICP co-founder, drummer and multi-instrumentalist Han Bennink was born in Holland in 1942. His first percussion instrument was a kitchen chair. Later his father, an orchestra percussionist, sup- plied him with a more conventional outfit, but Han never lost his taste for coaxing sounds from un- likely objects. He is still very fond of playing chairs. In Holland in the 1960s, Bennink was quickly recognized as an uncommonly versatile drummer. He accompanied touring American jazz stars, including Sonny Rollins, Ben Webster, Wes Mont- gomery, Johnny Griffin, Eric Dolphy and Dexter Gordon. At the same time, Bennink participated in the creation of a European improvised music which began to evolve a new identity, apart from its jazz roots. With fellow Dutch pioneers, pianist Misha Mengelberg and saxophonist Willem Breuker, he founded the musicians collective Instant Composers Pool in 1967, and remains the pivotal cre- ative force in this collective today. A most versatile artist, he is known for his absurdist, theatrical performances, frequently playing found objects. His collaborations are wide ranging, from a long-standing relationship with free jazz saxophonist Pete Brötzmann, two decades with Dutch post-punk band The Ex and notably through much of the 1990s he played in Clusone 3 with saxophonist/clarinetist Michael Moore and cellist Ernst Reijseger.
