Hunt for the Wilderpeople
Ricky Baker is a defiant, wayward city kid sent to live with foster parents Aunt Bella and Uncle (don't call me uncle) Hec, in the wilderness of New Zealand. When his Aunt dies and Ricky is threatened with return to a children's home, he absconds into the bush with his cantankerous uncle in pursuit. Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a lopsided gem, a character comedy and coming of age drama; heartwarming and surreal, with shimmering cinematography. It's sweet and moving, despite its protagonists' disdain for the mushy stuff. Directed by Taika Waititi, starring the brilliant Sam Neill (who just gets better with age, doesn't he?) and introducing Julian Dennison.
