Hazel Waters jailed for five years for stabbing her baby to death

The court heard Ms Waters has been in custody in the Central Mental Hospital but has refused to engage in any meaningful explanation of what had happened.

A mother who pleaded guilty to stabbing her toddler to death has been locked up for five years.

Hazel Waters, 47, of Ridge Hall in Ballybrack, south Dublin admitted killing her son Muhammad Hassan Khan between October 15 and 26, 2014.

She described her two-year-old as a "fake child" on the day she killed him by stabbing him with a pair of scissors.

Judge Patrick McCarthy handed down a seven-year sentence with two suspended at the Central Criminal Court today.

He said Hazel Waters, who was diagnosed with a personality disorder "must be reintroduced into society in a structured manner."

The court heard Ms Waters has been in custody in the Central Mental Hospital (CMH) but has refused to engage in any meaningful explanation of what had happened.

It's understood she will return to the CMH to continue her sentence.
