Three Irish sports stars on the importance of clubs to communities

We speak to Alan Quinlan, Brid Stack and Kevin McManamon about the importance of clubs in the community.

Between them they have 11 LFGA All-Ireland medals, two Heineken Cups and lifted Sam Maguire on four occasions. Alan Quinlan, Brid Stack and Kevin McManamon have excelled in each of their individual sports but they have another thing in common, their love for sport and talent was grown and fostered at their very first club.

Alan started his rugby career at Clanwilliam RFC before representing both Ireland and Munster for many years. Brid Stack played her first games with Rockchapel St Peter’s under-12s GAA Club before pulling on the red jersey for Cork Ladies, the most successful county team in the history of Gaelic Games. All-Ireland winner for Dublin Kevin McManamon still plays for his local club St Judes every summer.

While the trio have all gone on to play at the highest level, their love for their first club is still strong and they all put their club at the heart of their communities.

We asked Alan, Brid and Kevin about their very first club and what the club means to them:

Alan, Brid and Kevin are Topaz Brand Ambassadors and were all at Clanna Gael Fontenoy GAA Club in Ringsend to launch the Topaz Cash for Clubs initiative for 2017.

Topaz Cash for Clubs offers clubs from all around Ireland a chance to win up to €10,000 in funding with €200,000 in prizes up for grabs.

The programme, now in its third year, encourages all kinds of clubs, big and small, from sports clubs to creative clubs like art and dance to get involved.

After registering your club here for Republic of Ireland and here for NI, club members and supporters can collect points in any of the over 400 Topaz stations all around Ireland using Park or Play game tags which you can get in-store or through the Topaz Park or Play app. Once your tag has been set up to collect points for your local club, every time you spend over either €30 or £20 on fuel, you will receive one token for your club.

Once your club has racked up 2,000 tokens, it will automatically entered into an ‘everyone wins’ draw. The prizes include €10,000 for the first placed club, the next ten clubs will win €5,000 each and finally, 140 clubs will receive €1,000.

Do your part for your local club and get collecting points to be in with a chance of winning some much needed funds for your community.
