Organisers of Web Summit announce return of conference to Dublin

The summit moved to Lisbon last year following the Government's refusal to comply with number of requests

The organisers of the Web Summit have announced that one of their conferences will return to Dublin - less than two years after they left the Irish capital amid a sea of controversy.

Writing on Facebook this morning, the summit's organisers announced that its financial services conference, MoneyConf, is set to be held in Dublin, prompted by opportunities offered by Brexit

They also said the timing of their return has "nothing to do with Enda Kenny’s departure" as Taoiseach, following the election of Leo Varadkar as Fine Gael leader last week.

In a post, they wrote: "Brexit is transforming Dublin as a financial centre. Major banks, credit card companies and fintech startups have all signed leases in recent months.

"JP Morgan is moving up to 1,000 bankers alone to Dublin from London. It’s an incredible moment.

"And it’s in this moment that we’re moving MoneyConf, which is already one of the world’s leading and fintech conferences, to our hometown Dublin."

Organisers also announced they will provide €1.5 million a year in free tickets to students from every school and college in Ireland to attend their global events.

The first Web Summit was held in Dublin in 2009, and brought together attendees from a range of Fortune 500 companies and smaller tech companies, as well as various public figures.

In September 2015, organisers announced that they would move the event from Dublin to Lisbon following disagreements with the Government about a number of infrastructural issues.

Among the requests to the Government were the provision of dedicated shuttle buses from Dublin Bus, suspension of parking permission on a number of city centre streets, and complimentary rental of City Hall and Wood Quay.

The summit was hosted in Lisbon in Portugal last year, where it will continue to be held until 2018.
