A newly-engaged Meath couple have won big for the second time after they banked €50,000 on a Lotto scratch card win today.
Stephen Mullen from Navan, Co Meath and fiancé Charlene Balfe collected their winnings from National Lottery HQ this morning after buying a €5 All Cash Platinum scratch card in a local newsagent.
The couple, who have a one-year old son, revealed they will use the winnings to replace their old car and to help towards a deposit for a house.
Speaking as they collected the bumper cheque, Stephen - who works in Arnotts - revealed they had "rotten luck" just last week when their car broke down, and had to travel everywhere by bus.
But it turned out every cloud has a silver lining, as it was while waiting on a bus to Dublin that the pair sheltered in a local Londis, where they bought the scratch card after they took shelter from the rain.
Stephen said: "We don’t usually buy scratch cards so when I scratched off the winning numbers, I was still unsure as to what I had won.
“It’s an incredible amount of money to win at such an important moment in our lives. The first thing we need to do is replace our old car so waiting on a bus will be a thing of the past."
He added that the money will not only help save for a deposit for a house, but will also help the couple when it comes to planning their wedding.
But Stephen was quick to add: "We’ll take it one step at a time."
