Baby girl delivered in car in Dublin city centre

The couple were on route to Holles Street when the unexpected birth happened

A baby girl was delivered in a car on a Dublin city centre street yesterday`s morning.

The baby was delivered on Hatch Street while the couple were en route to the National Maternity Hospital on Holles Street when the unexpected birth happened.

Dublin Fire Brigade received a call at around 8.45am and rushed to the scene to find the baby was already delivered by 8.50am.

A Dublin Fire Brigade spokesman told TheJournal.ie : “It’s amazing, she delivered the baby herself.

"We finished it all off and prepped the baby. We had the hospital on standby and we notified them that the child was being delivered.

“We get this regularly. We see people on their way into hospital. Sometimes they leave it too late and they have to deliver in the car, in a taxi or even on the street.

“Usually we just have to make sure that the baby is breathing, that’s the main concern.”

The mum and baby were taken to hospital from the scene and are "both doing well".
