Garda ''lucky not to lose an arm'' after arresting two men

A garda was lucky not to lose an arm after helping with the arrest of two men who were suspected of hijacking a taxi in north Dublin.

The garda was struck by the vehicle and suffered serious arm injuries and had a lucky escape, it was reported by herald.ie.

No one suffered major injuries, however the taxi man also made a lucky escape after two thugs attempted to stab him.

The incident took place in Mellowes Crescent, Finglas.

It was thanks to the quick reaction of his colleague that helped him. The colleague, who applied first aid, is part of a Dublin-based Burglary Response Unit, which was set up to combat crime gangs and robbers.

The two men, a 39-year-old and a 27-year-old are currently being detained at Finglas Garda Station.

When being hailed, the taxi man picked up the two men who demanded that he handed over the Toyota Avensis by threatening him with a knife and pinning him to his seat.

The source confirmed that the knife didn't ''go through the jacket'' and that the driver was ''lucky to be alive after he was nearly stabbed twice''

According to The Herald , a number of unmarked garda cars as well as a helicopter from the garda Air Support Unit, were involved in the pursuit.

The scene was sealed off for investigation throughout Tuesday.

One neighbour remembers the scene to have been a ''massive commotion'' and led some people to believe that there had been a shooting.

"This guard would have lost his arm if not for the first aid given to him by members at the scene.

"He suffered a large gash to his arm and was rushed to hospital after being treated at the scene.

"Thankfully, he is now expected to make a full recovery, but this may not have been the case if not for the medical assistance given by a colleague."
