Shane Zoller told the Tampa Bay Times:
"She just wanted some damn candy.
"I was driving to pick her up with her bathing suit in my car to take her to the splash pads," her father added. "When I pulled up, that's when I saw all the police lights."
According to CBS news, both grandparents were in the house at the time. The four year old girl was the daughter of a 22-year-old father, who was a high-school student when she was born.
Her mother, Lizette Hernandez, is currently seeking custody of their other son, who is 19 months old.
''I don’t trust him with my child. I already lost one child. I don’t need to lose another.''
Ms Hernandez, who is pregnant with her third child, also said that her former boyfriend was telling her multiple stories about their daughter's death.
He first said that ''she was shot during a drive-by'' and then confessed that the ''gun was on the table''.
Police are currently investigating the cause and death of the child with the Hillsborough State Attorney's Office, police spokesman Stephen Hegarty said in a tbo.com report.
The family is now raising money for the tot's funeral on a crowdfunding site called YouCaring.com.
