South Dublin County Council asked to intervene in sudden closure of community centre in Tallaght

The centre, which has been open for 10 years, closed suddenly on Friday.

South Dublin County Council (SDCC) has been asked to immediately intervene in the sudden closure of Brookfield Youth and Community Centre (BYCC) in Tallaght .

The vital community centre, which has been operating in west Tallaght for 10 years, shut its doors suddenly on Friday.

According to staff, they were given an hour's notice and were immediately made redundant.

And now SIPTU is calling on SDCC , who own the building in which the BYCC is housed, to intervene.

SIPTU Organiser, Karen Smollen, said: "The Centre provides vital community services and facilities to young people in the local area. Tallaght Youth Service and the Dublin Dun Laoghaire Education Training Board are anchor tenants in the building.

"They provide resources, training, and other programmes with BYCC staff facilitating and supporting them. Between them the centre’s five staff have 50 years’ experience helping deliver community services.”

Staff were offered four weeks pay in lieu of notice, a move which was previously deemed "completely unacceptable" by People Before Profit.

Karen added: “South Dublin County Council own the building and have made no contact with staff.

"The closure of the centre with the loss of five jobs directly, as well as several TUS and Jobs Initiative positions, will have a huge impact on the local community.

"The same community which fought for over 20 years to have the centre built."
