Sheeran shows could be moved as locals object to Phoenix Park site

Efforts are being made to move next year's Ed Sheeran concerts within Phoenix Park after a number of objections were raised by residents and councillors.

However, members of Fingal County Council have requested an urgent meeting with Dublin City Council (DCC) in an effort to move the gigs to another location within the park.

Fianna Fail councillor Howard Mahoney said local residents were not consulted prior to a licence being granted and had raised concerns about amenities around the venue.

The concerts are set to take place near the Ashtown Gate entrance, but Mr Mahoney believes other areas in the park are more suitable.

He was hoping to avoid a situation similar to when country singer Garth Brooks was scheduled to play five concerts in Croke Park in 2014.

Then, after an intervention from DCC, the number was reduced to three. However, Brooks refused to play the reduced number and all shows were cancelled.

"It's a huge inconvenience for residents. We could have what happened at Croke Park for Garth Brooks," Mr Mahoney told a meeting of Fingal County Council last week.

"I'm putting forward a motion for Fingal County Council to meet with Dublin City Council as a matter of urgency to have the location for the upcoming Ed Sheeran concert moved to a more suitable location.

"If they have it in a more central location, for example the (Wellington) monument or the 15 acres, near the Papal Cross. It will be at least controllable," he added.

Mr Mahoney said local residents are "up in arms" about the venue and an apparent lack of consultation.

"It's a bit like Garth Brooks. We're not objecting to the thing taking place, we just feel there is a more suitable location for it," he said.

A spokesperson for DCC had not responded to a request for comment at the time of going to print.
