Ryanair flight forced to divert to Newcastle after failing to land at Dublin Airport

A number of flights had to divert from Dublin yesterday due to the hurricane-force winds battering the capital.

A Ryanair flight was forced to divert to an airport over 500km away yesterday after strong winds prevented it landing at Dublin Airport - writes dublinlive.ie.

The FR9431 Rome-Dublin flight was scheduled to land at the capital's airport at 13:35 yesterday afternoon, but had to divert to Newcastle Airport after making an attempt to land in Dublin during the hurricane.

Despite the nervy flight, passengers praised the crew for their actions in getting the plane to land, with one saying they "felt like the Pope when he kissed the ground" after the flight touched down.

A Ryanair spokesman told Dublin Live: "The flight from Rome to Dublin diverted to Newcastle due also to strong winds at Dublin.

"Customers were provided with hotel accommodation and refreshment vouchers, and boarded a return flight to Dublin this morning.

"Ryanair sincerely apologised to all customers affected by these weather diversions, which were entirely beyond our control.”

But the Rome-Dublin flight wasn't the only Ryanair service forced to divert from Dublin Airport yesterday.

Last night, flight FR293 from London's Stansted Airport, which was due to land at 21:30, was forced to return all the way to the English capital after making two attempts to land in Dublin.

The plane circled Irish skies for almost 45 minutes, before a decision was made that it was too unsafe to land and that the best course of action was to return to the UK.

In a statement, Ryanair said: "The flight from London Stansted to Dublin (16 Oct) was scheduled to operate during forecast lulls in wind speeds, however on approach to Dublin, winds remained higher than forecast.

"The crew made two attempts to land, in accordance with our safety policy, before returning to London Stansted."
