Anger as hospital cleaner job advertised with same salary as graduate nurse

A student has spoken out after a job advertisement has shown that graduate nurses receive the same pay as hospital cleaners - after studying for four-and-a-half years.

The 39-year-old student, who wishes to remain anonymous, has described the finding as a "kick in the teeth" - writes dublinlive.ie.

According to the advert on jobalert.ie , a Hospital Cleaning Operative is required in Beaumont hospital and will be offered between €26,001-€31,830 for the role.

There are no minimum requirements for the role.

The job was posted earlier today and the Dublin student, who will receive €28,500 when he graduates, said the advert sums up why so many Irish nurses go abroad for better pay and working conditions.

Speaking to Dublin Live, he said: "Obviously I mean no disrespect to those who work as cleaners, but nurses put in four and a half years of training for their BSc degrees only to start their careers on a very small salary.

"I can't think of one nurse in my course who is planning on staying in Ireland for more than a year after they graduate. They want to get their experience and then go somewhere where they will be treated better."

He added that it's difficult to stay positive when it's clear that nurses are undervalued and unappreciated in Ireland.

He said: "Irish nurses are held in very high regard in the UK and elsewhere, it's a shame it's not the same here."

The Dubliner said that many nurses feel let down as it was hoped their pay packets would be raised by 12.5% to keep in line with similar professional fields, but this has yet to be implemented.

Commenting on this, the student said: "There's an attitude that if you go into nursing, you should be going into it for the love of it but the pay and conditions we're expected to work in are ridiculous here."

He added: "The patients make it worth it. Knowing they appreciate the work being done means a lot. But more hospital support and equality in comparison to other Bsc(Hons) degrees would be nice."
