Medical boards unhappy with proposed children's hospital name

The medical boards of the three children's hospitals have rejected the proposed new name for the national children's hospital.

The Joint Medical Board isunhappy with the proposed name ofPhoenix Children's Hospital - writes rte.ie.

The Joint Medical Boardcomprises all threechildren’s hospitals in Dublin, atCrumlin, Temple Street andTallaght.

In a letter to the Children’s Hospital Group, themedical board saidthere is already a large academic centre in America called Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Doctors saidthis would cause confusion at international meetings.

It also saidthe name is very insensitive to the families of children whose organs were retained and subsequently incinerated, and would serve as a constant reminder.

However in a statement on behalf ofPhoenix Children's Health (formerly known as the Children's Hospital Group), the group said: "The name for the new children's hospital, Phoenix Children's Hospital, was selected following an extensive and inclusive process that included staff of the three children's hospitals, children and families.

"The Phoenix is a symbol of regeneration, hope and renewal and is an appropriate name for a hospital that will be at the centre of the ongoing transformation of children's health services in Ireland," added the hospital group.

Labour Leader Brendan Howlin has called on Minister for Health Simon Harris to intervene.

"Over the weekend, several commentators have suggested that naming the hospital after Dr Kathleen Lynn would be more appropriate - serving as a fitting tribute to one of the many women who fought for equality in Ireland, and for the best possible treatment for sick children.

"Simon Harris has an opportunity to put an end to all of this. He should issue a direction that the National Children's Hospital simply be named as it is, or alternatively, that it should be renamed in honour of Kathleen Lynn," said Mr Howlin.
