Luas and Inner City Helping Homeless team up to fill an entire tram with Christmas gifts

Last year over 20,000 shoeboxes were donated to homeless people across the country - and this year, ICHH are hoping to beat that.

Inner City Helping Homeless have teamed up with Luas operator Transdev in a bid to fill an entire tram with Christmas gifts for homeless children - writes dublinlive.ie

The volunteer organisation's annual 'Shoebox' campaign is calling on the public to put a number of items in a shoebox to give to the country's homeless people this Christmas.

And as part of the drive, a special donation point will be set up on Thursday December 14 at Connolly Station Luas Stop from 7am to 7pm, as the ICHH and Transdev aim to fill an entire Luas with gifts.

Last year over 20,000 shoeboxes were donated to families in emergency accommodation, homeless hostels, women's refuges, age action groups and the people sleeping out on the streets of Dublin.

This year ICHH want to beat that record. Here's how you can help:

  • Get a shoebox, mark it male or female and fill it with items such as: scarves, gloves, underwear, socks, chocolate/sweets, roll on deodorants, tooth brush/paste, soap, gift vouchers or a Christmas card.
  • If you would like to do a Shoebox for a child please mark it Male/Female and specify the age group it is for.
  • For more information you can contact fundraising@ ichhdublin.com and shoeboxes will be accepted up until Friday the December 15.
  • Shoeboxes can be delivered to Inner City Helping Homeless Monday to Friday 10am-10pm at their office which is 72 Amiens St, Dublin 1

Speaking about this year's drive, an ICHH spokesman said: "Last year the generosity of people allowed us to bring a smile to a lot of faces over Christmas and we need your help again to make the Christmas period that little bit better for the homeless community.

"We are calling on businesses, schools, colleges, communities and individuals to come together and support the 8,374 people homeless around the country as well as the homeless people that don't appear in any official figures.

"Does your office do a Kris Kindle? How about donating a shoebox for the same price and really bring a smile to someone's face over the festive season."
