Body of homeless woman found on street in Cork

An investigation is under way into the death of a woman in her 40s whose body was found on a street in Cork city centre.

It is believed that the woman had been sleeping rough and gardaí do not believe at this stage that her death is suspicious - writes

Her body has been removed to Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will take place later.

The woman's body was found close to the Anderson's Quay emergency shelter run by Cork Simon Community at around 11am.

She is understood to have been a user of homeless services in Cork for a number of years, and had been interacting with homeless services in recent days also.

There were 282 adults in emergency accommodation in Cork at the end of October, according to the latest figures compiled for the Department of Housing.

It isthe eighth death in Ireland of a person sleeping rough since late August.
