Dog warden attacked by German shepherd owner in broad daylight

Fingal County Council is asking anyone who may have seen the attack to contact gardai in Malahide.

A dog warden was attacked on the grounds of Malahide Castle after approaching a man walking a German shepherd without a muzzle

The warden was left badly shaken after reportedly being grabbed by the throat during the assault, which happened in broad daylight last Saturday, December 2.

The man is an employee of Ashton Pound, which is contracted by Fingal County Council .

Ashton Pound manager Donal Moroney told Dublin Live: “The warden was going about his normal duties when he saw this guy with a German shepherd that wasn't muzzled.

"He went up to the man, which he has every right to do as German Shepherds are on the restricted breed list, and when he tried to speak to him about it this man just went for him.

"He grabbed him around the neck, by the throat really, which is awful. The warden wasn't hurt physically, but he was very shaken.

The incident was reported to gardai and the matter is being investigated.

Mr Moroney paid tribute to the employee who was assaulted, saying: "He's a really nice guy as well - he hasn't been with us for that long - and to his credit he was back in work the following day.

"He'll be working in Malahide Castle's grounds again this weekend, but this time there'll be two wardens working. That way, if this sort of thing happens again, there'll be a witness.

"It's just awful to think that a decent guy is doing his job and this sort of thing happens.

"Thankfully, this sort of thing doesn't normally happen. The wardens do get a bit of verbal abuse, but nothing physical, until last week.

"The matter has been reported to the gardai at Malahide. We take this sort of behaviour very seriously. Our wardens are always civil and we never receive any complaints about their attitude.

"For this to happen to a nice guy just out doing his job is disgraceful. Our wardens are there to protect the public after all, and it's not like they were out there ordering people about."
