The 22 year-old was discovered by a relative in an upstairs room of the property at Woodville Avenue in Lucan , Dublin at around 3pm yesterday.

And it is understood that Jack's devastated mum Elaine had to make a heartbreaking dash home from Spain, after she was given the news on holiday.

Dublin Live was also told that the popular youth enjoyed a night socialising with pals at the scene where his body was found just hours later.

Officers sealed off the scene yesterday and were last night trying to trace his final movements and the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

A source said: “The young man suffered an injury to his chest and this appears to be the cause of his death.

“He was not known to Gardai and was not involved in any criminal activity.”

Jack worked as a mechanic at Sarsfield Motors dealership in Kilmainham , Dublin. He is understood to be a popular employee and colleagues were said to be deeply shocked at the news of the death.

Investigators are waiting until the State Pathologist arrives at the scene to determine the course of the investigation.

Shocked neighbours said they were baffled by the shooting of the popular and well-liked lad.

Jack was believed to live in the house with his brother, mother and her partner.

It is understood that his father predeceased him in recent years.

One Woodville Avenue resident said: “We only saw the ambulance and a Garda armed response unit at 3 o’clock.

“He only got back at five or six this morning. He was such a nice lad, so polite and unassuming.

“It’s a very quiet estate, we don’t even get break-ins around here. I can’t believe it’s him.”

Another added: “It’s bizarre, so sad. He would be too polite or well spoken to be involved with anything.

“He was quiet and reserved and walked the dog. He never gave offence to anybody.”

A Garda statement said: “Gardai are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a body of a male in Lucan.

“ Gardai and emergency services were called to a house on Woodville Avenue when the alarm was raised shortly before 3pm.

"The body of the man, who is understood to be in his early 20s, remains at the scene which is preserved for forensic and technical examination. The office of the State Pathologist has been notified."
