Homeless charity receives planning permission for 18 apartments in Dublin

The project marks the first phase in a pipeline of housing projects by the homeless charity.

The Peter McVerry Trust has been granted planning permission to build 18 apartments in Dublin City Centre - writes dublinlive.ie.

The project, which marks the first phase in a pipeline of housing projects by the homeless charity, will be its largest capital housing project ever.

The apartments will be built within a former Dublin City Council building at 2 Townsend Street, which has been vacant for a number of years.

The charity plans to modernise it the building and increase the size of the apartments within it, as well as carry out substantial works around stairwell arrangements and lift access.

Peter McVerry Trust CEO Pat Doyle says that the development is a the first phase of projects that will see the charity build larger and better quality housing over the next two years.

He said: "Yesterday, we received formal notification that Peter McVerry Trust has secured planning approval for 18 units at Townsend Street.

"It’s a real good news story for us. At the end of this project, there will be 18 new keys to a home and 18 people leaving homelessness behind.

"This is the type of project that we want to do much more of, because more social housing is the only way we can sustainably reduce the number of people in homeless services."

Mr Doyle added that the charity was seeking to create high quality homes for single people, and that each new resident would receive dedicated supports from Peter McVerry Trust housing staff to help transition to their new homes.

The charity is currently preparing to issue a public tender to appoint a project contractor after which it can commence works on the scheme, and hopes to begin work on site as early as possible.
