Top honours for Dubs Stars as GAA launches hunt for chief

Scores of Dublin's best GAA players lined out for the Dubs Stars awards event yesterday.

Nathan Mullins, of St Vincents, was named footballer of the year and received his trophy from the Herald editor Alan Steenson and Ray Coyne of sponsors Dublin Bus, while Sean Moran, of Cuala, was named hurler of the year at the event, staged at the Radisson Blu Hotel - writes

Mullins, the son of Dubs legend Brian Mullins, was a key member of the Clontarf team that won the Dublin Senior Football Championship Final against Ballymun Kickhams.

Moran, centre half-back of Leinster champions Cuala, revealed he is due to be married next month.

He added it was a privilege to play with such dedicated team-mates.

"After the success we had last year, we all just wanted to get back on the horse and go again," he said.

Former Ireland international hero Niall Quinn, who played hurling for Dublin at a minor level, entertained the crowd at the event, which was sponsored by the Herald.

The presentation came as the GAA launched a campaign to find its next director general, following the imminent retirement of Paraic Duffy in March.

In an ad campaign which began yesterday, the organisation said it was looking for a "suitably qualified professional" with "a passion for Gaelic games and Irish culture", to fill the role.

Among responsibilities will be development of the GAA vision and strategies.

"The remuneration package will reflect the responsibility of the role," it said.
