By now we're sure everyone's finished the Christmas dinner and enjoying the food coma. But why do we always have a turkey for dinner?
Turkey has been a staple of Christmas dinner in Ireland for years now. There's not much that can beat a couple of slices of turkey, ham, stuffing, gravy, carrots and parsnips, roast potatoes and cranberry sauce - writes buzz.ie.
Before the turkey, families would eatgeese, boars’ head, chicken, cow andpeacocks during Christmas.
So why is turkey the bird of choice?
As with a lot of things... this one comes from the USA. Turkeys were imported from the USA into Britain in 1526 and were incredibly cheap to sell.
They were also not as useful as chicken or cows because they don't produce eggs or milk.
Turkeysare also huge and a turkey would be able to feed a large family with ease.
They weren't practical to have year-round because they were very hard to refrigerate. Instead, it was only consumed on special occasions.
As well as that some British monarchs ate turkey at Christmas and people liked to follow suit.
