Dad-of-two 'hijacked taxi and rammed garda cars'

A man accused of the knifepoint hijacking of a taxi that then rammed numerous garda cars is facing trial.

Tony Ward (39) is also alleged to have intentionally reversed into a garda and caused him serious injury - writes

He was allegedly in possession of a stolen garda jacket, garda cap and trousers and a hi-vis jacket when he was stopped.

A court previously heard that the taxi driver would claim he was told Mr Ward and his co-accused "needed the car for a job" before he was forced out.

Mr Ward, of Castlecurragh Park, Mulhuddart, appeared before Blanchardstown District Court charged with endangerment and with forcefully seizing a 131-registered Toyota Avensis.

It is alleged that he intentionally crashed into a number of garda vehicles at Mellowes Crescent, Finglas, and that he intentionally reversed into a garda and caused him serious injury.

Mr Ward is also facing more than 10 counts of dangerous driving at locations including Tolka Valley Road, Cappagh Road and Wellmount Road, all in Finglas, as well as at Coldcut Road, Dublin 22, and Bally- coolin Road, Blanchardstown.

The accused is further charged with seriously assaulting a man at Ballyboggan Road, Cabra, seriously assaulting a garda at Mellowes Crescent, Finglas, and possession of a wooden-handled flick knife.

He is also charged with numerous counts of criminal damage to garda cars and with possession of a stolen garda jacket, cap and trousers and a garda hi-vis jacket.

The incidents all alleg- edly took place last August 29.

A state solicitor said that the book of evidence was being drafted and would be ready shortly.

Defence solicitor Anna Bridgeman said there was consent to a date next month.

Mr Ward, a father-of-two, had been a manager of a re- cycling plant but lost his job, the court heard. He has not yet indicated a plea to the charges.
