Irishman dies after altercation in Australia

An Irishman has died following an incident in Perth, Western Australia.

Local media reports say that in the early hours of last Saturday morning, Charles McCarthy, who was originally from Co Cork but had been living in Perth,was walking with two people when a dispute arose with two other people.

During the altercation, Mr McCarthy sustained a head injury and fell to the ground - writes rte.ie.

Members of his family flew from Ireland over Christmas to be by his side in hospital, where he died.

A 34-year-old man has been charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm.

He is due to appear in court again next week.

Mr McCarthy, who was from Upper Aghada in Co Cork, worked as a cable layer in Perth.

He is survived by his wife and two small children.
