A motorist who contactedKildareNowclaimed he was passed by 39 cars as he stuck to the 60km per hour speed limit on the M7 road works zone.
'I was passed by 39 cars in 7 mins' - driver on M7 roadworks speed limit
The driver also calculated that thousands of euro worth of fines are being missed by not stopping vehicles who break the limit - writes kildarenow.com.
He said: "I travelled on the M7 [roadworks zone] yesterday.
"I stuck to 60km/hr but I was passed by 39 other vehicles in the seven minutes it took me to travel the road works section.
"There were no speed cameras or Garda Traffic cameras. "
He added: "At €80 per Fixed Charge Notice for speeding, that's just under €27,000 in fines in the hour that is being missed."
Gardai have consistently warned motorists that breaking the 60km limit in the works zone will result in fines and being brought to court on charges of dangerous driving.
The special speed limit is in place to protect road users and workers as the widening project continues along a stretch of the M7 for the next two years, to facilitate the motorway's €110 million upgrade.
The M7 carries approximately 70,000 vehicles per day and is the main network connection to M9/Waterford, M8/Cork and M7/Limerick.
