The Iona Institute has said the proposed abortion law by the Government is not restrictive compared to other jurisdictions.

Speaking at a press conference this morning, lawyer Maria Steen said the planned provision to allow abortion in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy for any reason is common around Europe where a high number of pregnancies end in abortion.
MsSteen said even if the Government was planning the 12-week rule only"that would be tantamount to abortion on demand because very few abortions take place after 12 weeks for the simple reason that almost every abortion has happened by this point".
